How did you use new media technologies in the construction and research, planning and evaluation stages?

We used the internet as our main tool with in our main and ancillary tasks as it has many different properties for watching videos and researching information:
• Google – We used this as our main search engine through this we found other artists websites found out about digipaks and discovered links to videos. We used googles image site to give us ideas for our photo shoot through paparazzi shots and professional photo shoots.
• You Tube – this is where we watched music videos for our research and we could also watch home made music videos to show us what could be achieved with little equipment and basic knoledge of film making.
• MySpace Music – This is where we researched unsigned artists as they post videos and music in hope of promoting themselves. We were able to notice trends that people in our chosen genre were following. This ensured that our products were current and up to date with the standards held within the industry.
• Blogger – this is where we kept a diary of our production prosseses.
We used the Macs in our school which had software such as:
• I Movie HD – We ued this software least year in our foundation task. However this year we had to not only remember our skills from last year but had to also learn new methods of using the editing and FX as a music video has a different feel to a film opening. We were able to experiment with FX and Transitions along with precise editing
• Photoshop Elements – None of us had use this programme before so to get a feel for the programme we just dove straight in and just through trial and error discovered different FX and editing tools we also had help from teachers so we could learn quicker.
• Preview – Through this we were able to view all of our images.
• Safari – This web browser enabled us to access the Internet and view high quality web streams of videos and audio files.
• I Web – This is a programme that allows you to create a webpage. This is also a programme none of us has used before but we easily figured out how to input pictures and text with music and videos. One thing we struggled with was resizing the page to fit in everything we wanted to include but through testing different methods and thinking logically we managed to figure out how the measurements of the page were altered.
These were all the main things that were involved in our production tasks. iMovie was used to import and edit all our footage. With out this software we would not have created a film which we were happy with as this is the main software we used. Photoshop was a new programme we used to edit our photographs, this was a development of skill from our As course as none of us had used this software before. It helped us create professional standard photographs and add effects that we otherwise wouldn't have been able to achieve. I Web was another programme that we had never used before and so we had to experience with this as well. Through all our research into websites we knew the layout we wanted and so found it really easy to translate this into the programme and make the product we desired.
If we were to do these tasks again we feel that we would like to use the newer version of iMovie as we feel this would give us more scope to be creative and use more effective FX and transitions, other than this I feel that we have used the software that we had at had to the best of our abilities and have created products that replicate our skills well.

What have you learned from your audience feedback?

Through our research we discovered that the target audience for our music video was going to be people between the ages 16-24, mainly students in full time education and consisting a large following of females. Other possible artists our audience would listen to music from are artists such as Jack Penate, Jack Johnson and maybe bands such as Coldplay and The Arctic Monkeys. As we are involved in this age group we know that this genre of music does appeal to people of this age and so whilst making our products we were able to ask people we knew what they thought to ensure that we kept our tasks applying to this audience.
To find our target audience we researched in to the fan bases of similar artists. We did this by looking at there websites, looking in to the radio stations they were played on and watching clips from live performances. For example, James Blunt and Jason Mraz were played more on Heart fm rather than Kiss because of the genre of music. The audience for Heart fm is around 16-35 as a mixture of old and recent music is played. Comparing the target audiences of all our chosen artists we were able to come up with an average age range. Another thing we discovered was that the audience is mixed gender but the male artists tend to appeal to girls slightly more than boys, due to looks and style.
It was easy for us to find a miked group of people who liked the easy listening acoustic genre as we are part of a sixth form and our friends have similar taste in music to us. This group, however, only covered the younger end of the age range 16-18 and so to even this out we ask family members and teachers that were in the target audience requirements to take a look at our products.
We gave each person with in the group a small questionnaire for them to fill out, so we could process all the groups’ information quicker. We asked them to read the sheet then watch the video and fill in their responses. I feel this worked well, they knew what they had to look for before the film and they weren't just watching it without thinking, this made the answers given more accurate and useful.
As shown in my blog useful feed back was given. The main problem with the video we discovered was that they found the symbols confusing and couldn’t quite understand there conotations. Other than that they found the standard of the video very high and enjoyed the song and performance.

How effective is the combination of your main product and ancillary tasks?

Our ancillary tasks are to produce a website homepage and a digipak to accompany our music video. We chose these as they are two tasks we feel compliment each other well, we feel we can incorporate the music video in to the digipak and promote both of this on the website. Both of these would be used to advertise the artist in a real life situation, in today’s society there is a great need for online presence that anyone can access and look at for information, from a marketing point of view both of the tasks create an identity that will become recognisable from a fan and consumers point of view. We chose a website over a magazine advert as we wanted to develop new skills and broaden our view on the media world. To make a website we used a programme called iWeb, this is a programme that none of us had much experience in but were keen to learn about. Another factor influencing our choice of tasks was that we wanted to use photography and have a range of images to use with in our tasks. From choosing the digipak we were then able to start planning some artistic shots to help promote and make the album stand out. We decided that our website would include promotional shots of our artist so we had to organize a photo shoot. Through this we developed a set of skills using a stills camera, lighting and Photoshop software. Overall, our choices of practical tasks worked well together and enabled us as a group to try out different media techniques.
Before we started planning our digipak we researched into what precisely a digipak was, what was their purpose and how they were laid out. Through our research we discovered a Digipak is a patented style of compact disk or DVD packaging. Digipaks can have as many panels as you wish, we decided upon a 6 panel version as we like the look of this style. The use of booklets within a digipak is not essential so we decided this is something that we would not include. We will however include the main conventions that we have discovered a Digipak includes, these are:
• Cover Image
• Back Cover Image
• Song Titles
• Bonus Feature
• Colour Scheme
• Other Images
Before starting the production of the website task we did research into the websites of the main artists that we had chosen within a similar genre to that of our artist. From my blog you can see images of the websites that we chose to focus on:
• Jason Mraz
• David Grey
• Jose Gonzalez
We chose these artists as our main research tasks as they were the ones that had different features within the website. The main conventions that we found were:
• Links
• Upcoming Dates
• Media
• Easy to navigate
Within the ancillary task our main focus was to link the ancillary tasks with our main production task. We each task was to advertise in a different way yet had to compliment each other. We used the same background for the website as the front cover for the digipak to use this as a main image for our artist like a logo/icon, considering this is his debut album we had to create a recognisable feature/style associated with him. We chose a colour scheme of black and white with the only colour used being teal for the text. We chose this colour scheme as it can appeal to both sexes of our target audience. By creating continuity through colour schemes of our ancillary tasks and the main product we were able to create a real image as if this artist was actually being promoted. We wanted the Digipak to show an insight into the artist and promote his music. To do this we used pictures of Josh, taken at our photo shoot, to help publicise him. Also we included the music video as a bonus feature on the album. This would not only help the album sell, but would also give the buyer their own copy of the video. This linked with the website where we felt we needed to put the latest news and keep audience and fans up to date with the latest information of our artist, we did this using a recent news update and twitter blog, this also made the website seem personal to the artist. A biography about Josh at the beginning gave the reader background information that they wouldn't be able to get from any of the other tasks. Finally, our music video had the aim of portraying the inner feelings of the artist not only through the lyrics but through the action and performance. By using different angles in the performance element of the video the audience are able to see different sides to Josh, also by having him ending the video in shot we can see as a viewer the journey through emotions he has taken through the song, starting off quite happy, but the eventually feeling reminiscent and slightly depressed.
As a group we feel that we did not focus on the ancillary as much as we could of as we focused mainly upon the Video. This was because we viewed the video as more important during the completing stages.

In what ways does your media product, use, develop or challenge forms and conventions of real media products?

We chose to make a music video For our media production. When Making a Music video the aim is to promote the artist and boost record sales. Music videos are played on channels Specific to music, like MTV, and therefore act as an advertisement for that artist. A music video needs to be able to catch people’s attention and Stick in the memory. We started our reasearch by researching into the conventions of standard music videos so we could try and replicate these in our video. The form of a Music video tends to depend upon the genre of the song. Music Videos use a wide range of film making techniques that can be portrayed through various different styles:
• Narrative
• Abstract
• Animation
• Live Action
• Documentary
But you don’t have to just stick to one style you can also have a mixture of a few of these key styles, through this you are able to explore lots of different stylistic features in a music videos. Also dependant upon the genre of music the styles may vary. Live action footage from concert gigs may be used in a video but this is more by acoustic artists, narrative story lines tend to be more for r 'n' b and rap videos.
After our initial research we researched into popular artists from different genres of music and watched videos from each artist either from there website or on youtube.com:
• Rock – Bruce Springsteen – Born in the USA
• Hip Hop – Vanilla Ice – Ice Ice Baby
• R 'n' B – Rhianna – Take a Bow
• Blues – Eric Clapton – Tears in Heaven
• Country – Johnny Cash – I got stripes
• Acoustic – Jack Johnson – Breakdown
• Metal – Iron Maiden – Holy Smoke
• Indie – Jack Penate – Second, Minute or Hour
• Easy Listening – Jason Mraz – Im Yours
The most common features that were used in videos from different genres were:
• Slow Motion
• Mixture of performance and narrative
• Black and White
• Performance - guitar shots
• Close Up, Panning, Tracking, Establishing
These are therefore things that we shall attempt to include in our music video.
When we chose a song we decided to chose from a genre we all knew well and felt would be easier to create a music video, the genre we chose was easy listening acoustic. It is also helpful that the target audience of this style of music is of our age group upwards (16 - 24) mainly students still in education. We feel that the audience would be mainly female because of the appeal of the artist. Due to the target audience we are able to easily retrieve feedback and know ourselves what needs to be included in the video.
In the easy listening genre the main convention is the presentation of the artist. When we watch videos from this genre we notice the artist was the videos main attention and there was not a lot of story line. Locations are very casual, low-key and suburban in the videos, for example in a backstreet or park. This matches the style of the music and keeps attention focused on the performance, which is the main aspect.
In the song we chose the lyrics did not create a clear narrative, this is because there is only one verse that repeats, we decided we would develop the narrative feature and create a thematic collection of images/symbols to reflect the idea of the song (The City). This way we are still holding a sense of direction but aren’t actually telling a story. The conventional genre features we chose to replicate were:
Man & Guitar – this appeared in most of the videos we researched – e.g. Jack Johnson, James Blunt, Jason Mraz - we decided to cast Josh Embury, the singer/songwriter as our performer. This was not only because he knew the song but also as his style matched exactly the image we were looking for, laid back casual.
Editing Techniques – change of colour in a shot or perhaps speed
Locations – usually set in quite a isolated place
We used all these conventions within our music video to replicate the genre and match the style of music. We used such Editing techniques of ghost trails, time reverse and slow motion, within our shots of the traffic to create a busier and more interesting scene. We placed our actor in an isolated place combining the two features of Man & Guitar with Location. We found that sticking to these conventions helped us keep within the chosen genre helping us to link the song and video together.
We decided to reflect the lyrics less literally than in other music videos this was by using a selection of symbols (-> + <3 = ?) this was to show the confusion of choosing between love and heading somewhere new this helped give our video an individual identity. This is a strong continuing motif that we use throughout the video and is clearly recognisable feature that could be related to our song.
I believe we have achieved a professional standard as throughout the editing stage we have been very precise with how we cut and put our footage together. When adding the music we made sure that the lip-syncing was as accurate as humanly possible on the software we used (iMovie HD). This means that hopefully when the audience are watching they aren't constantly frustrated at the song not being in time with the footage and can just view the video as if they are just watching a performance. Overall our music video generally followed the conventions set but we did develop and challenge a few of the features, for example the use of symbols to reflect the lyrics instead of a clear narrative.

Digipak

Our other ancillary task is the Digipak for this we researched into firstly what a digipak was and how they were presented. We found out that a Digipak is a patented style of compact disk or DVD packaging.

Here are a couple of examples that we found:

We found out that a Digipak can have as many panels as you wish. We Prefered the look of the 6 panel version, like the one above. Also although most digipaks have information booklets we discovered the use of booklets within a digipak is not essential, therefore this is something that we may not include. We will attempt to include the main conventions that we have discovered a Digipak includes, these are:

* Cover Image
* Back Cover Image
* Song Titles
* Bonus Feature
* Colour Scheme
* Other Images

These are therefore all things that our Digipak will include.

We found this net on the internet which tells the exact measurements needed to make the Digipak the correct size

This Will be our guide. After we asked our technology department in school what the best way to make a digipak would be they demonstrated to us a programme called 2D Design, this will allow us to input all the measurements into the computer and then add our Digipak to them. We can then link up to a special machine which creates and prints the project.

We have chosen to use the following image as our cover shot:

We used photoshop to create the pop art effect using the layering tool. We changed the colour scheme to just black and white, we did this as we wanted to keep it quite simple and effective. For the title and artist test we experimented with many different fonts and colours before choosing. The colour of our Digipak will be black with colours only in the text (which we shall use teal for) and in the pictures that we chose to include.

Website homepage

Our first ancillary task is a website homepage. We chose this as it would be a challenge for us as none of our group had ever experienced making a Website before and we would all learn new new skills. We knew of the software IWeb on Mac's so decided to use this to make our Website.

Before starting to create our website we did some research into websites of some of the artists that we Desided were in a similar genre to ours.

Jason Mraz:

* Voiceover
* Different Links: Home, News, Media etc.
* Abstract Layout
* Animation - Head moves

David Gray:

* Basic Insights all on homepage
* Latest News
* Tour Dates
* Links

Jose Gonzalez:

* First page click to enter site
* Simplistic/Boring
* Formal
* Discography
* Video
* Downloads - Screensavers

Looking through these websites we descovered the main things that we need to included are:

* Links
* Upcoming Dates
* Media
* Easy to navigate

These are what our target audience will be looking for, so we will make sure we include these in our site to the best of our abilities. We will also make sure that our site is interesting and eye catching so that people enjoy looking at it.

Ancillary tasks

Test Shots:

For our ancillary tasks we chose to do the Website Homepage and Digi-pack options. We are going to use photographs for both of these and so whilst Mattie and I were filming the performance We took some test shots ON Mattie's Mobile Phone Camera. These are what We produced:

We noticed Matties' shadow was in the first three pictures, we tried to photoshop this out, but we all felt that this looked false so we could not use these pictures. Therefore we will just re-shoot these.

We then used just the regular picture viewer and played around with colour, saturation and hue to create a different look to the images. Here are the edited pictures:

Then we started experimenting with photoshop and we were able to create more exciting effects and even use diferent effects on different sections of the photos. Here are the images we were able to create through this program:

Audience feedback

Our Target audience is people of our own age group so we decided to get a group of people from our 6th form to watch and comment on our video. We created a questionnaire for them to complete after watching. This included the following questions:

1. Did you think the narrative of the video suited the song?
2. Did you think that the performance and the recording of the video was of a high quality?
3. Was the editing of the video done at a high standard? e.g. transitions?
4. What did you think about the shots? Were they the right shots to use and were they placed in the right place?
5. What would you change and why?

These are questions that we feal cover everything that we want our target audience to pick up on and have an opinion about. Also the results from these questions would tell us whether they understood and liked the video, which is one of the main criteria for a target audience to have.

Here are the responses to question 1:

* Yes, because it followed the story of the song and it made sense to fit it to the song.
* The lyrics did tie in with the song.
* Yes, good symbolism/representation, especially the reverse shot at the end.

Question 2:

* Yes, apart from the four people moving around, they looked messy.
* The people holding the cards could have been organised a bit better.
* Overall the quality was very good.
* The acting/performance was very strong.

Question 3:

* Although I could tell where the transitions were, but they worked very well with the song.
* Yes, good sense of flow.
* All very good, except for part with the random people with cards.
* The use of the ghosting edit from I Movie was very good.

Question 4:

* The use of shots of the City worked very well for the song and definitely were in the right place.
* They tied in well.
* Yes, although there was a lot of focus on the signs, which were slightly confusing.
* The part where the traffic went past looked very professional

Question 5:

* Get rid of the people holding the cards because they didn't work with the song
* Take out the people with the symbols as the transitions to them weren't smooth enough.

All of this feedback we have taken into account and are thinking of ways around the confusion with the signs.
